Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Southeastern and Central Europe, on the Lower Danube, North of the Balkan Peninsula and the Western shore of the Black Sea. Romania shares a border with Hungary and Serbia to the West, Ukraine and Moldova to the Northeast and East, and Bulgaria to the South. The capital of Romania is Bucharest.

Romania is a unitary, semi-presidential republic, member state in NATO since 2004, and the European Union since 2007. Also, it is a member of the United Nations, OSCE, WTO and BSEC.

Romania is now a democratic country, enjoying freedom of speech and assembly. In 2016, Freedom in the World Index classified Romania as  “Free” country. Although experiencing difficulties over the economic crisis, the civil society in Romania continues to be engaged in advocacy efforts, national debated and social projects with a large impact.  Moreover, Romanian CSOs have an extensive experience in implementing cross-boarder and regional projects under the Cross-Boarder Cooperation Programme.
