EU launches consultation on the future of its relations with neighbouring countries / DL for submitting contributions: 30 June 2015

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy Johannes Hahn have launched a consultation on the future of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).

According to a press release of the European Commission, it is essential to undertake a fundamental review of the principles on which the policy is based as well as its scope and how its instruments should be used, given the significant developments in the region since it was last reviewed in 2011.

The aim is to consult as widely as possible both with partners in neighbouring countries and with EU stakeholders until the end of June, and the proposals will be included in a Communication on the future direction of the ENP to be released in Autumn.

The consultation will follow four priorities: differentiation; focus; flexibility; ownership & visibility and five areas of common interests: trade and economic development; connectivity; security; governance; migration and mobility.

In order to set the context of the consultation, the European Commission and the High Representative adopted on 4 March 2015 a Joint Consultation Paper “Towards a new European Neighbourhood Policy”, highlighting lessons learnt from ENP until now, as well as key questions for discussion with partners and stakeholders.

The consultation on the future of the European Neighbourhood Policy is now open until 30 June 2015, having as target group: public authorities, civil society, think tanks, social partners, business and academic communities, other relevant stakeholders and interested members of the public.
